Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious condition that often causes anxiety among many people.. Despite its rarity—with only 0.03-0.50 cases per 100,000 menstruators—understanding TSS is crucial for period health. TSS is caused by specific strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Group A Streptococci bacteria. These bacteria are present in 10-20% of menstruators, but only a fraction carry strains capable of producing the TSS-1 toxin. Four main risk factors contribute to TSS: Presence of staph or strep in the vagina Altered vaginal pH (blood raises pH during menstruation) Oxygen introduction (via tampons, menstrual cups , or menstrual discs ) An entry point to the bloodstream (cuts or tears in vaginal tissue) All menstruators are at risk of TSS, regardless of product choice.
